Cast two people – Jesus and a man.
Props: a rucksack containing three balloons. Written on them PRIDE -AMBITION – HEART. A Bible
Jesus One Do you really want to follow me?
A man Two Well, what you are saying makes sense. I know it’s true. Its just that I’m a bit scared. I mean, I’m not sure I can cope if your way is a difficult one.
One I will be with you. I will never leave you or forsake you, so don’t be afraid.
Two Thanks, So, where do we start? Do I need a map or anything like that?
One First things first. What have you got on your back?
Two Just a few bits and pieces I need to take with me.
One Why do you need them?
Two They’re of sentimental value and such a comfort when things are difficult.
One God has sent me to those who are sad. Do you mind if I take a look?
Two (draws back) I don’t know. I mean, they’re personal (thinks about it) But I think I can trust you. (Unstraps his rucksack and reveals 3 balloons)
One (Taking out of the rucksack the “Pride” balloon) Pride is only going to weigh you down. Why have you packed it?
Two Well, it’s nice to have something around when I’m feeling depressed. that I can brag about. I didn’t flinch when I was confronted by the gang’s boss.
One Whoever humbles themselves will be lifted up. If you try to cling to pride you will only be brought down. May I take it?
Two Take it? But it’s grown up with me for many years. It’s important.
One Important enough to die for?
Two No I wouldn’t die for it.
One Then I’ll take it (takes balloon) I’ve already died for it. (Bursts balloon) That’s better. Now – what else have you got?
Two One or two things. But that’s enough for one day?
One It’s for your own good. (One removes another balloon from rucksack) AMBITION What is this for?
Two Well, I hope to be rich, a big house with several cars on the drive.
One We know that in all things God works for good of those who love him. Don’t you believe that?
Two Well . . Yes . . . I’m beginning to . . .but . .
One Then you won’t be needing this. May I ( bursts the balloon)
Two I suppose so.
One Now there is just one thing I need to deal with for now (takes out HEART balloon) Your heart.
Two Hang on a bit (gets agitated) You can’t take that, I really must have that. I can’t live without it. I’ll die.
One Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
Two I’m too young to die.
One I’m talking about dying to your old selfish ways and finding new life in me. then you’ll really live.
Two But what happens when you burst that?
One Who said anything about bursting it? If you’ll let me. I want to look after it for you – keep it safe.
Two (relieved) Oh, that’s alright then. Are we ready to get started yet – I’m ready to go with you now.
One You asked for a map earlier. Here it is (hands over a Bible). It’s also a sword.
Two Why do I need a sword?
One Because the enemy (devil) will come to you with convincing lies. He will tell you that you haven’t taken away PRIDE and AMBITION and make them appear like heavy weights that stop you from moving. Use it to fight back against him.
Two Thank you. (Opens the Bible) “Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest to your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Turning to One) I do feel lighter now.
One Then you are ready. Let’s go. ( Two follows one off stage.)
